PUBLIC RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY


Brunswick Dixie Youth All Stars
Brunswick Youth Development League (BDYL)
The BYDL was organized by volunteers and operates for the sole purpose of providing organized sports, recreational and educational programs for the youth of Brunswick County. The BYDL serves as an umbrella organization for a variety of sport leagues including football, cheerleading, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, and T-ball to youth ages 5 to 18. Fees apply.

Brunswick Lake - also known as County Pond

Brunswick Lake is a 157-acre impoundment that is maintained by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The pond offers opportunity for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.

Great Creek
County Park at Great Creek
County Park at Great Creek is located on the outskirts of Lawrenceville. This public park is on the banks of Great Creek Reservoir, a 212-acre flood control lake. The park offers a boat launching ramp; two fishing piers (one is handicap accessible); playground area; picnic shelters with grills/tables; football/baseball field; volleyball court; horseshoe pit and nature walking trail. There is no fee to utilize this facility. The park is operated and maintained by Brunswick County and is open April through October.

Sand Dollar Seaplanes
Lake Gaston
Lake Gaston shoreline reaches approximately 350 miles and covers 20,300 acres of water. The lake offers fishing, hunting, camping, boating, swimming, and an array of water sports. A number of public boat launching ramps are available. Neighborhood marinas provide complete marine goods and services.

Lake Phoenix
Lake Phoenix - A Scuba and Camping Park
Lake Phoenix is a scuba and camping park operated by the Rawlings Quarry Diving Company. The reservoir is approximately twenty (20) acres. The park offers camping and rental units (primitive, RV, and cabin), scuba diving, swimming, and associated equipment rentals. The park is operated Mid-March through Mid-November. Fees apply.

Meherrin River
Flowing through largely agricultural and forested land, this 30-mile Scenic River possesses a number of interesting aesthetic features including rock formations, several vegetated islands, sections of riffles, and a meandering alignment with interesting and inviting views downriver. Meherrin River offers canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.

Nottoway River
Nottoway River is a 28-mile Scenic River with a minimum of development that provides good fishing for a variety of species. The Nottoway River has produced some trophy fish and is one of only a few rivers that is home to the "Roanoke Bass". The river offers canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming.

Tobacco Heritage Trail
Roanoke River Rails to Trails, Inc. - Tobacco Heritage Trail
The vision for the Tobacco Heritage Trail is one of a connected ribbon of non-vehicular pedestrian transportation that will link towns, counties, natural resources, and cultural destinations all without the need for an automobile. Specifically, the trail shall be a recreational outlet for hiking, walking, jogging, biking, and horseback riding utilizing abandoned railroad beds. No fees apply.

Virginia Cooperative Extension - 4-H Program
Young people in the 4-H program learn leadership, citizenship, and a vast array of life skills that benefit them for the rest of their lives. Youth, ages 5 to 19, can take part in four different camping programs (Residential 4-H Camp; Special Interest 4-H Camp; Day 4-H Camp; and Cloverbud 4-H Camp). Fees apply.
