1. When are taxes due?
Taxes are due annually on December 5th.  If paid by the last Friday in February, no penalty and interest will be added.

2. If I sale my vehicle doing the year, will I get a refund?
No.  Brunswick County does not prorate.  Billing is based on whatever you own on January 1.

3. What do I do if I dispose of a vehicle?
Notify DMV and the Commissioner’s office.

4. I turned my plates in, why are you taxing me?
Just because you turned the plates in, doesn’t mean that you disposed of the vehicle.  On DMV, it shows that you still own it, it just doesn’t have tags. 

5. I don’t live in Brunswick, why are you taxing me on a vehicle?
We get information from DMV.  DMV shows that your vehicle is garaged (located) in Brunswick County.  DMV has to be updated.

6. I paid taxes in another locality; do I have to pay taxes in Brunswick County also?
No, you are not obligated to pay taxes in both localities. Based on your answer to certain questions, will determine where you pay taxes.

7. How long do I have to pay taxes on my old vehicle?
As long as you own the vehicle, you are liable for taxes.

8. How can I find out who owns a property in Brunswick County?
If you know the property address or the closest address near the property, the commissioner’s office can look it up for you.  You can also put the address in online.  Be mindful, that what you see online is currently the owner as of January 1st.  Hopefully in the near future, ownership will be more up to date.

10. I’m elderly and on a fixed income, does Brunswick have a program to help pay my taxes?
No.  Brunswick County does not have the elderly and disabled program.

11. Some other localities have this program, why not Brunswick? 
An ordinance will need to be passed by the Board of Supervisors.    

12.  Do I have to pay taxes on an antique vehicle?
Brunswick County local ordinance exempts antique vehicle from taxation. This means that if you have a registered vehicle with antique or vintage tags on your vehicle, you will not be taxed. 

13.  I haven’t gotten my state refund; can you check on this for me?
Yes, once we verify your identity, we can research it for you.

14. Can the commissioner of the revenue’s office do my taxes for me?
We will do your state taxes, if you provide your federal income tax return and W2s or other withholding documents.

15. If my vehicle is damaged during the year; will I still have to pay taxes on it?
Yes, if it was damaged after January 1st, you still have to pay all taxes.

16. What are my tax obligations if I am active-duty military and maintains Brunswick County as my legal residence?
Under the Soldier's and Sailor's Civil Relief Act, your tax liability would be to  the County of Brunswick regardless of where you may be stationed or where your vehicle may be garaged or located during the year.

17. I am active-duty military and have a vehicle located in Brunswick County but my home of record is out of state, will I have to pay taxes on it?
No.  If your home of record is another state, Brunswick County will need to see your January LES (leave & earnings statement) to be exempt from taxes. The LES will list the state.    

 18. Where can I get a copy of my deed?
Deeds, Wills and Survey Maps are located in the Clerk’s office.  Contact the Commissioner’s office for references.

19. My neighbor has encroached on my property, how can the Commissioner’s office help me with this situation?
The Commissioner’s office is not able to provide assistance in this matter.  If ownership is not known, we can assist with providing that information.

20. Does Brunswick County have a business license?
No. Brunswick does not have a business license.  If you are operating out of the Town of Alberta, Town of Brodnax or Town of Lawrenceville, you will need to contact the appropriate town.
